Keeping BetWest play inside your limits

Published Updated

Gambling at BetWest is for adults aged 18 and over and is meant as paid entertainment, never as income. Registration asks you to confirm that you are 18 or over, and an account is opened only on that basis. The controls described here are available on a BetWest account, and the independent services named operate in Great Britain. If one of the warning signs applies to you, act on it the same day, not after the next session.

Warning signs, including those that come from bonuses

  • Stakes rise after a loss in order to win the money back.
  • Time at the lobby or the live tables regularly runs longer than planned.
  • Money meant for rent, bills or food is used for deposits.
  • Play is hidden from family or friends.
  • A further deposit is made only to finish the 35x rollover of a welcome stage before its 10 days end.
  • Winnings are returned to play instead of being withdrawn, so that the first payout is never requested.
  • A deposit is made on a Monday to Thursday only to receive the 50 reload spins.

The last three belong to bonus play. A bonus makes play last longer, and a deadline makes it feel urgent, but neither is a reason to place stakes that were not in the budget. When a deadline rather than the budget decides the next deposit, drop the offer and ask our support team for a break or a limit.

A budget set before the bonus is accepted

A rollover turns a deposit into a larger sum of stakes. The numbers are round examples. A deposit of £100 matched at 100% gives a balance of £200 in play. The stakes to place are 35 x £200 = £7,000 within 10 days, which is £700 a day. A member who plays for an hour with £20 stakes would place far less than that in a day, so a rollover of this size is a reason to leave the welcome stage unused or to choose stage 4, where a 50% match on the same deposit needs 35 x £150 = £5,250. The free spins of the first stage arrive at 35 a day and carry 40x on their winnings, which adds a second count. If the stakes needed are not affordable, the stage is not worth taking.

Working out a monthly ceiling

A limit is easier to keep when it is derived from a budget. If the amount set aside for entertainment is £120 a month, the weekly figure is £30 and the figure for four sessions a week is £7.50 each. The numbers are an example. A deposit limit equal to the monthly amount stops a month of play from exceeding it, and a lower weekly limit stops the whole amount from being used in one session. The same figure should be compared with the stake target of any bonus before the bonus is taken.

Cashier features that work as barriers

Three rules of our cashier slow money down and are useful to a member who wants less play. Withdrawals are handled only from Monday to Friday between 06:00 and 17:00 GMT, so a request made on Friday evening waits until Monday. Up to three requests can be pending at once. Payouts go to a payment method in the name of the account holder. A member can use these pauses as time to think, and can withdraw a balance instead of returning it to play.

Sports betting and live play

The sportsbook offers live betting on more than 20 sports. Live odds change quickly, and a bet on a live market is easy to place on impulse. The sports welcome offer has a 6x rollover and 30 days, with minimum odds of 2.00 on singles, but a rollover on the sportsbook is no reason to bet more. Live casino tables run all hours, and the Reality Check reminder shows how long a session has lasted.

Cashback is not a way to recover losses

Cashback returns a share of net losses and does not undo them. Sports cashback is 10% of net losses: after a net loss of £100 the return is £10, and it carries a 3x requirement. Casino cashback of up to 15% and live cashback of 25% carry 1x. Each still leaves the member with a loss, so none of them is a reason to keep staking.

Two decisions in the cashier and the profile

The welcome stage is switched on only with the “Activate” button, shown in the notification after a qualifying deposit or later in the profile. That click is the moment to compare the 35x stake target with the budget; a stage that does not fit is better left alone.
A withdrawal can be cancelled while it is still pending, from the Withdrawal tab of the cashier or from Balance History. Cancelling sends the money back to the balance and into reach of play. A member who wants less play lets the request run and receives the payout instead.

Independent help in Great Britain

GAMSTOP is the national online self-exclusion scheme for Great Britain. It lets you block yourself from online gambling websites and apps and is free. GambleAware offers free help at any hour. These services are independent of BetWest, and using them does not depend on the state of your account. A relative or friend who is worried about another person can also contact GambleAware for advice.

When to write to us

Write to us when one of the signs above has appeared twice in a month, when a deposit has been made to meet a deadline, or when you want a limit or a break before the next bonus. A written request is the record of what you asked for and from which date, and live chat is open around the clock for the same purpose. If you would rather stop completely, say that you want self-exclusion and register with GAMSTOP as well.
